Cedar House Inn Demonstration Project

Project Type

Rural, Residential, Commercial, Demonstration, Educational

Project Summary

A eco friendly bed and breakfast inn and permaculture demonstration project/educational site on 3 acres in the North Georgia mountains.

Project Description

The inn has been operating since 2003 to provide guests with bed and breakfast lodging in an eco friendly manner. The inn structure is a passive solar design and has many green features.

The owner/innkeepers started using permaculture principles and methods in the Fall of 2009 in developing an extensive organic vegetable garden using sheet mulching methods to create fertile soil and a no till garden. The first year was very successful and provided food for the innkeepers and guests. Inn guests also were eager to learn about the techniques used to transfer to their own gardens. Swales were also begun in 2009 for water retention and conservation. Many swales have been added throughout the property.

We have also added gutters and rain barrels to catch rainwater. Greywater reuse is planned for the future. Composting toilets have been in use in the yurts since opening the inn. Humanure composting is performed as well as composting of kitchen waste and paper.

The owners have planted over 300 trees and shrubs on the 3 acre site since purchasing the property to attract wildlife, provide shade and reduce the carbon footprint. In 2010 the non food producing varieties have been thinned out to accomodate food trees and bushes (berries and fruits) to be used by the owners and guests.

This project is a "work in progress" with additional plantings, ponds and other permaculture elements added over time.

The project is intended to provide food for the innkeepers/guests, wildlife and surplus given to neighbors, friends or sold. In the future preserving and canning of the surplus will be performed for year around food use.

The project is also designed to serve as an educational tool to show students about living a permaculture lifestyle.

Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.
