Legend of Badges

Note: The various badges displayed in people profiles are largely honesty-based self-proclamations by the individuals themselves. There are reporting functions users can use if they know of blatant misrepresentation (for both people and projects). Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI Teacher

With the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable.

PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows.

Project Summary

Maungaraeeda (formerly known as Kin Kin SOULS) is a permaculture demonstration site with ongoing projects demanding well thought out permaculture design. Maungaraeeda is aboriginal for "Place of food". Our property is proud to be alcohol, drug and chemical FREE. We aim for minimal waste by re-using as many resources as possible. All fertilizers, compost and mulch used is produced on our property. We use secondhand or naturally occurring materials to build and improve on the property. We aim to make as much as possible on our property, from biogas to cheese to water heaters!

Project Description

For more about us, please read the following article: http://permaculture.org.au/2011/08/03/farm-tour-of-kin-kin-souls-permaculture-demonstration-site-plus-one-tip-you-must-know-before-for-setting-up-your-first-swale/

Besides our beautiful Permaculture gardens and food forest, we have a number of animals. Goats, cows, chickens and dogs all roam the property.

Baby goats

We believe in living a simple lifestyle, treading gently on the earth and its inhabitants and try to focus on our needs, not our wants. We enjoy our peaceful surroundings and would like to create a community feel on our property, with everyone helping and enjoying the benefits.

We try to re-use EVERYTHING! Cans, bottles, plastic bags/wrap and anything else plastic, old clothes etc. and try to find building materials which are local or recycled. Tom spent weeks a few years ago pulling down an old building, and he got a lot of good quality, recycled timber from  it. In today's building environment, people are happy to get buildings pulled down without having to pay for it. Usually the land these older buildings are on is worth more to them without anything on it. Local rock or clay are also great building materials, which we are using for our bathroom (see below).

All paper products are recycled on our property, we have an old paper shredder, which shreds the paper and cardboard down enough so it can be used as mulch. Other (smaller) bits of paper can be put in the centre of banana circles, the bananas love it!

We grow as much food as we can, in plant and animal form. We milk our cows/goats and make our own cheese (fetta is very easy and quick to make, even if you are out all day!) and yoghurts. We eat simple but healthy foods and try to eat as much homegrown and homemade as possible. We aim to have only a couple of small shopping bags of waste every week, if not less. We are working towards eliminating waste all together by minimising buying any packaged products.

Backyard grocery store

EVERYTHING we eat, drink, use, wear, build and drive has cost the earth something. The only question is, can that something be easily replaced or does it mean it will be lost forever? We try to question every purchase and every action. Awareness is not enough, the time for action is NOW!

Permaculture Design Certificates and Internships are also run at Maungaraeeda, and we offer a consulting and design service.

Please come and visit our Permaculture Demonstration site or visit www.permaculturesunshinecoast.org for details.

We would love to see you here!
