HPC is a grass roots organisation implementing integrated community development programs in remote and marginalised regions of Nepal. It works farmer-to-farmer providing demonstration and training in sustainable agriculture and appropriate technology.
HPC is a grass-roots farmer-led organisation registered with at district (CDO) and government (SWC) level in Nepal. It is made up of an alliance of community-based groups currently from 11 villages in Surkhet and Humla districts in Mid-Western Nepal, with staff and members who are all farmers, and have a wealth of experience in planning and implementing people-centered development programs in remote and challenging environments.
Over the past 30 years, an increasingly capricious climate combined with 10 years of conflict and nearly 3 years of sustained high food prices, has reduced the ability of Nepal’s poorest households to depend upon their land to meet their basic needs. The population growth increases the impact upon the environment, making such communities less resilient to future climate changes. Remote areas are especially vulnerable as the crops they produce are at more risk from climate change, while the costs of importing food to make up the deficit are also rising, and will continue to do so.
Indicators of poverty in Humla are some of the highest in Nepal: crop productivity, life expectancy, child mortality, distance from health facilities, literacy rates, school attendance, food security, etc. are all at the bottom of the list.
The project aims to be a model for introducing the concept of resilience into communities in its working areas, and for demonstrating those techniques and approaches required to maintain adequate food security.
The priorities of HPC’s work are to achieve agricultural productivity, good health, and resilient local communities and organisations in the most holistic, participatory and integrated way.

Legitimacy, competency and reputation for all people and projects can be evidenced and/or developed through their providing regular updates on permaculture work they’re involved in, before/after photographs, etc. A spirit of objective nurturing of both people and projects through knowledge/encouragement/inspiration/resource sharing is the aim of the Worldwide Permaculture Network.

PRI TeacherWith the exception of the ‘Member’ who has never taken a PDC, all of the above can apply to become a PRI PDC Teacher. PRI PDC Teachers are those who the PRI recognise, through a vetting board, as determined and competent to teach the full 72-hour course as developed by Permaculture founder Bill Mollison – covering all the topics of The Designers’ Manual as well as possible (i.e. not cherry picking only aspects the teacher feels most interested or competent in). Such teachers also commit to focussing on the design science, and not including subjective spiritual/metaphysical elements. The reason these items are not included in the PDC curriculum is because they are “belief” based. Permaculture Design education concerns itself with teaching good design based on strategies and techniques which are scientifically provable. PRI PDC Teachers may be given teaching and/or consultancy offerings as they become available as the network grows. |
