My name is Kofi Amu, a Ghanaian, currently resident in Gaborone, Botswana as an ICT teacher at Maru a Pula School.
My parents were farmers and so my interest in farming/gardening for fresh produce has been a way of life. I have also been helping students to learn to garden and it has become interesting to look into best practices of gardening/farming. A search in the Net brought up permaculture as a better way of urban gardening. I have since changed the way I am gardening around my house in Gaborone. I am doing very well in vegetable gardening - supporting my household and friends with fresh produce regularly. I have oranges, tangerines, grape fruits, sugar apples, peaches, mulberry, amarula trees, pawpaw, young mango tree, young avocado tree and roses. I hope to have about two hectares farm land of my own in Botswana to transfer the ideas there.
I have also started cocoa farming in Ahafo-Ano South, Ashanti Region of Ghana. I have since 2012 introduced permaculture principles to the farm in Ghana. Since the place is tropical, I hope to develop a forest like farm with similar plants and extend beyond. Currently, I have heavy planted plantain in the young cocoa trees. I visit the country twice every year and I hope to implement the permaculture design submitted for certification by the end of 2015.
